The Morakniv Basic 511 has a 3.625-inch carbon steel blade at 8.25 inches overall, a red polypropylene handle and a gray molded plastic belt sheath with a drain hole. Made in Sweden.
The drain hole in the sheath is a small thing that matters. A wet blade left in a closed sheath rusts, and on carbon steel that happens quickly, so a hole in the bottom lets water out instead of holding it against the blade. Carbon steel takes a keener edge than stainless and comes back quickly on a stone, and Morakniv still uses it on the Basic line for that reason.
The Basic is Morakniv’s plainest working knife, sold for decades to Swedish tradespeople on the argument that a knife needs a good blade, a comfortable handle and nothing else. Red makes it easy to spot on a bench or in a toolbag. Explore more Utility and Work Knives.
